Packing Specifications for Custom LCD Modules: What to Require

Put the packing requirement in the purchase order: individual ESD protection, surface protection, edge support, inner cartons, and outer packaging with handling marks. State the packaging standard the supplier must follow and the inspection point (before shipment, on arrival) where compliance is checked. A packing spec turns “pack it well” into verifiable requirements.

Why LCD Panels Arrive Damaged in Transit

Most transit damage is mechanical: panels shift inside loose packaging, edges impact the box, or stacked cartons crush lower layers. Moisture and ESD add invisible damage—corrosion and latent failures that appear after the panel is installed. Understanding the failure modes points the packaging at the right protection: rigid edge support, proper fit, and environmental barriers.

ESD Protection: Bags, Grounding, and Handling

LCD modules are static-sensitive. Individual ESD bags (shielding bags for higher-risk parts), grounded handling at both ends, and labeled warnings protect against electrostatic damage. ESD failures are often latent, so the packaging and handling discipline matter as much as the electrical design. Require ESD-safe packaging and handling evidence as part of the shipping spec.

Packaging Design: Foam, Edge Support, and ISTA Tests

Mechanical protection comes from edge support and cushioning that keeps the panel from flexing or shifting. Foam pockets, edge spacers, and correctly sized inner cartons distribute handling loads; ISTA-style package tests simulate transport and verify the design survives the distribution cycle. If the supplier has not package-tested the module, the first real shipment is the test—an expensive one.

Moisture Barrier: Desiccant, MBB, and Indicators

Moisture can damage LCD modules during long sea shipments and storage. Moisture barrier bags (MBBs) with desiccant and humidity indicator cards protect against ingress, and the indicator card shows whether the barrier held. Require the moisture protection appropriate to the shipping mode and storage time, and check the indicators on arrival.

Shipping Modes: Air vs Sea Cost and Risk

Air freight is faster and exposes modules to fewer days of handling and humidity, at higher cost; sea freight is cheaper but adds transit days, stacking, and moisture risk. Choose the mode from the program’s schedule and the module’s fragility, and design the packaging for the worst leg of the journey, not the average one. Cost comparisons are industry examples; price the actual route and volume.

The Claims Process: Photos, Timing, and Insurance

When modules arrive damaged, the claim process decides who pays. Inspect on arrival, photograph the packaging and damage before moving anything, note the damage on the carrier’s delivery record, and file within the agreed window. Insurance terms and the supplier’s replacement policy belong in the purchase agreement so the process is known before damage occurs.
